Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) has announced a unique venture to expand its dual enrollment program with Broward College. The new venture expands current Broward College course offerings to include online learning options. The dual enrollment program gives high school juniors and seniors an opportunity to enroll in courses at Broward College and earn both high school and college credits.

Through collaboration with Broward Virtual School, Broward College is now offering five college courses entirely online to BCPS high school students. This is the first venture of its kind in the state of Florida.

aimee brooks Hal Krantz, an experienced teacher at Coral Springs Middle School is upset about the state of affairs in education today.

He wonders how he will be paid in light of recent merit pay legislation.

“No one can explain what this new legislation means,” said Krantz. “Will it be based on student achievement. If my students do well, will I get a one time bonus or a permanent raise. Will it count toward my retirement. How will it work for special education teachers or elective teachers.”

Krantz said there really is no such thing as tenure in the State of Florida. A principal can fire a teacher if that principal follows procedures showing that the teacher performed poorly. They only real defense that teachers have is a due process system.

“The legislature is saying they don’t even want to go through the due process approach. A principal can just say you’re fired,” said Krantz.

Krantz said he expects the Florida Education Association to file a lawsuit because the legislation violates union collective bargaining arrangements.
